Swedish defenceman Max Ranström signs with Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George George Spruce Kings are excited to announce the signing of 2004-born defenceman Max Ranström for the 2023-24 BC Hockey League season.

Born in Filipstad, Sweden, Ranström will come to Prince George after spending last season with Skellefteå AIK J20. In 36 games, the 18-year-old blue-liner scored two goals and 12 assists (14 points) and just four penalty minutes. The season prior, suiting up for BIK Karlskoga J18, he played in 32 games and scored five goals and 31 assists (36 points). He also suited up for five games with BIK Karskoga’s J20 team, adding three assists.

“My agent told me that the BCHL had made some new rules allowing European players to play next season,” said Ranström. “One of the biggest reasons why I wanted to commit to Prince George was the fact a lot of people had many good things to say about the team and coaches, and that it was a top program in Canada. Another big reason what that I really liked the calls between me and (head coach) Alex Evin. I liked the way he wanted to play and how his view on development was.”

Ranström has already committed to Lake Superior State University for the 2024-25 NCAA D1 season and fills one of a possible two European spots on the Spruce Kings roster for next season.

“We are thrilled to have Max join our program to prepare himself for NCAA Div 1 hockey,” said Spruce Kings head coach Alex Evin. “While there will certainly be some transition to the North American style of play, we believe Max’s skillset and mind for the game will allow him to contribute at a high level for our team.”

Welcome to Prince George, Max!
