Spruce Kings Open Season with Win

The Prince George Spruce Kings kicked off the 2022-2023 Regular Season with a 3-0 victory over the Coquitlam Express Friday night at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex.

After a scoreless first period, it was John Herrington who got the Spruce Kings on the board as he deflected a Charlie Banquier point shot past Adam Manji. Austin Fraser drew the second assist.

The period would end that way, as the Spruce Kings held a 22-16 edge in shots through 40 minutes.

Early in the third period, Fraser worked hard on the end wall to get the puck to Herrington, who took one step out from below the goal line and lifted a backhand shot to the top corner of the net to make it 2-0.

The Spruce Kings were given a 5-minute power play just 38 seconds after the goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net on any of their 8 shots.

Linden Makow would find the empty net from the neutral zone with 1:51 remaining.

Jordan Fairlie was solid all night between the pipes for the Spruce Kings, making two key penalty kill saves in the second period, and locking it down in the third.
