The Prince George Spruce Kings have chalked up the first win of the season, defeating the Victoria Grizzlies by a 6-1 score in front of 785 loud and proud fans at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.
In the opening frame, newly added defenseman Evan Orr made his name known in his first two shifts of the game. Orr threw 3 hits in the opening shift, followed by a picture perfect shot on his second shift to give the Kings an early 1-0 just under four minutes in. At 11:03, it was another first as Andrew Seaman got a great back door feed from Brett Pfoh and Seaman deposited the puck in the back of the yawning cage to put Prince George up by two at 11:03. 31 seconds later, Prince George native Corey Cunnningham received a pass from Nolan Welsh, and Cunningham was able to wrap it around and shovel the puck past Grizzlies goaltender Joe Howe to put the Spruce Kings up by three. The offence was not done, Ryan McAllister put home his first career BCHL goal as the London Ontario born forward got a great feed from Chong Min Lee to put the Spruce Kings up 4-0 at 17:22 of the opening frame.
In the second, the Grizzlies had some chances, not allowing a shot from PG in the opening eight minutes. The first shot of the period for the Spruce Kings came from Chong Min Lee, and it was a quality one. Lee went forehand backhand on a breakaway to undress Howe and put PG up 5-0 at 10:36. Seven minutes later, Nick Poisson had a two-minute minor for tripping, which led to the first Victoria marker. Returning forward Darwin Lakoduk put home a puck past Jett Alexander to get Victoria on the board at 18:59 of the second.
In the final frame, the PG kid struck again. Cunningham deflected a Nick Bochen shot on the man advantage to put the Spruce Kings up 6-1 early in the third period. That was all the offence the Spruce Kings needed as they continued to a 6-1 victory at the RMCA. Jett Alexander chalks up first career win as a Prince George Spruce King.
New coming defenceman Evan Orr says the atmosphere in PG was amazing, and says everything feels right, a game in, “That was a lot of fun, it was a heart warming welcome, these fans are great, it was so fun to play in front of a loud crowd, and I’m looking forward to more of it”. Orr also talked us through his first goal as a Prince George Spruce King, “Credit to Hillsy (Brendan Hill) for sliding it over, I like to jump up in the play and I think my shot it was one of my best attributes, and it felt great to get the first one”.
Next up for the Spruce Kings are the Penticton Vees in the final game of the Spruce Kings 4 game home stand.
