Training Camp Coaches and Schedule Announced

The Prince George Spruce Kings are excited to kick off their 45th season this week by announcing their training camp schedule and training camp coaches.

Starting Thursday players will sign in, and be assigned to one of three teams all coached by former Spruce Kings. Team White will be led by RJay Berra, Team Red’s coach will be Justin Fillion, and new Spruce Kings assistant coach Ryan Howse will coach Team Blue.

RJay Berra spent three season with the Spruce Kings from 2008-2011 after coming to the team from the Cariboo Cougars. The Prince George native had 107 points in 154 games with the team, and was named the captain in his final year. Following his junior career RJay played four seasons of NCAA hockey at Oswego State and Marion University before playing two seasons of professional hockey in Europe. He is now the assistant coach for the Prince George Tier 1 Midget Cougars who are coming off a provincial title.

Justin Fillion had his time overlap with RJay Berra as a Spruce King, joining the team in 2008, and graduating in 2011. After junior hockey, Justin played three seasons of NCAA division 1 hockey at Michigan Tech. Also from Prince George, Fillion had 108 points in 160 games as a Spruce King. This coming season Fillion will be head coach of the Prince George Midget Tier 1 Cougars.

Ryan Howse rounds out the training camp coaching staff coming off provincial winning year with the Prince George Tier 1 Midget Cougars. He is the newest assistant coach for the Spruce Kings taking over for Jason Garneau. From Prince George, Ryan played two games in the 2006/2007 season as an affiliate player for the Spruce Kings, and also played for the team as they hosted The 2007 RBC Cup National Junior A Championship. Ryan joined the WHL’s Chilliwack Bruins the next year. In his second full season with the Bruins, he was selected in the 3rd round of the NHL Draft 74th overall by the Calgary Flames.

Each team will practice on Thursday evening and then play a combined four intra-squad games Friday and Saturday. Sunday morning will be highlighted by the Spruce Kings Training Camp All-Star game with two teams made up of the top players from training camp.
