Spruce Kings Score Early and Late, Fall 3-2 to Vees

The Spruce Kings scored the first and last goals of the game, but it was all Vees in between that. Kyle Johnson got things started for his side just 1:08 in, as Jarod Hovde drove the wing, and centred the puck to the front of the crease. Crashing the net Johnson had the puck deflect off his skate, and past Mat Robson who had allowed just one goal in the previous five periods against Prince George. The visitors would hold that lead all the way to the intermission with Stefan Wornig facing just six shots.

Penticton found their legs in the second period though, and it was Chris Klack scoring his fifth of the season. Coming down the left wing, Klack dragged to the middle, and used the Spruce Kings defender as a screen beating Wornig’s glove. The Vees took their first lead of the game off a goal from Duncan Campbell who had scored twice in his team debut the night before after coming over from the Brandon Wheat Kings. Klack was the playmaker this time around, springing the forward for a breakaway. With just over five to go in the second, Campbell buried the puck for the 2-1 Penticton lead. Prince George would draw a penalty with a minute left, but were unsuccessful so they headed to the intermission with a minute of power play time to work with to begin the final frame.

They were unsuccessful, which continued the trend of strong penalty killing with all eight man-advantages in the game being denied. Penticton would bury the dagger with Klack stealing the puck behind the net from Wornig, and wrapping it around into the empty cage. Connor Russell would score from the bottom of the left circle on a one time, but with seven seconds left in the game the Spruce Kings were unable to find the miracle goal to tie the game at three.

Robson finished the night stopping 22 of 24 shots to hold onto the 3-2 win and was named the second star of the night, while Wornig surrendered three goals on 23 shots. Chris Klack with the pair of goals and assist was the third star, while Duncan Campbell was the first star for the second game in a row. Prince George will aim to pick up a point from the weekend as they take on the West Kelowna Warriors with a 2:30 puck drop in the Royal LePage Place.
