Spruce Kings extend contracts to GM Mike Hawes and HC Alex Evin

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Spruce Kings have announced contract extensions for both general manager Mike Hawes and head coach Alex Evin.

Hawes, 53, signs a new three-year contract with the organization after concluding his 18th season with the Spruce Kings Hockey Club. Hawes began working for the Spruce Kings as an Assistant Coach and has worked his way up through the front office ranks. 2023-24 will mark his 13th season as General Manager.

“I have been with the Spruce Kings now for almost 20 years. As a person who grew up in Prince George, I take a lot of pride in how the Spruce Kings represent our community. It has taken a lot of work by a lot of people and I am very proud of how far the organization has come and how well-respected we are throughout the BCHL and throughout the hockey world. I very much look forward to another three years with the Spruce Kings organization and continuing to do the work every day to make our organization one of the best and one that the people of Prince George can be proud of.”

Hawes was general manager for the club when they brought Prince George its first-ever Fred Page Cup and Doyle Cup championships and was also named the 2019 BCHL Executive of the Year.

“I’m happy to sign Mike to a new three-year contract,” said Spruce Kings President David Keough. “Mike has been the face of the Spruce Kings for many years. Mike strives to make others around him better, from our players, coaching staff, and to our front office. He has a great reputation within the BCHL and across Junior Hockey, which has helped our organization become one of the best in Junior A Hockey. I look forward to the future and the successes that are ahead of us.”

The Spruce Kings have also given head coach Alex Evin a two-year contract extension.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to continue working for a great BCHL organization,” said Evin. “I enjoy working alongside Mike Hawes and the rest of the team, and look forward to continuing to build on the solid foundation we have here in Prince George.”

Evin, 35, has spent the last six seasons with the Spruce Kings, two as the associate coach, and four as the head coach. Evin took the bench boss reigns after former head coach Adam Maglio joined the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League. The Castlegar, BC native was also the Associate Coach for the 2018-2019 Fred Page Cup and Doyle Cup championship teams.

“I’m happy to sign Alex to a new two-year contract,” said Keough. “Alex has been with the organization for many years now and understands what we expect from our team. He has a great ability to teach today’s players and strives for excellence from the players and the hockey staff. I’m happy we have started to solidify our staff as we move forward into next season.”
