The Prince George Spruce Kings lit the lamp with authority on Saturday as potted three power-play goals as they dominated the Powell River Kings enroot to a 5-1 victory.
“Special teams has really been firing for us and even the penalty kill as well, we wanted to do that tonight and we executed it pretty well,” says Dylan Anhorn, Spruce Kings defenceman.
The Spruce Kings lit up their rivals in the second period, forcing them to take four straight penalties and scoring three times.
Blake Hayward tipped home a blast past a screened Matteo Paler-Chow to make it 1-0.
The Spruce Kings scored two more to cap off the impressive period from Ethan de Jong and Patrick Cozzi.
Powell River ran their consecutive penalty streak up to seven early in the third, which contributed to a pair of quick-strike markers courtesy of Ben Brar and Dustin Manz.
“We’re just trying to get some pucks to the net and it creates a lot of havoc in front of the goalie and we’re just burying the loose pucks,” says Brar.
“We got a few goals past him early (Paler-Chow) and he’s a younger goalie too so that played a part in it and it just went well.”
The stellar play of the Spruce Kings defensive core was once again on display limiting Powell River to 14 shots.
“Well, we focused a lot on the neutral zone clogging that up with some consistent play and I think that the forwards have bought in and the defence has bought in and keeping the shots to the outside for Evan and we’re doing a great job there as well, so all around we’ve done really well,” added Anhorn.
Prince George is up 2-0 in their best-of-seven Coastal Conference Championship series with games three and four set for Monday and Tuesday in Powell River.
