Spruce Kings wrap up Mainland Division crown despite loss to Surrey

The celebration might not have been very long, but the wait is finally over.

The Prince George Spruce Kings clinched their first BCHL Mainland Division title since joining the league 21 years ago, despite falling to the Surrey Eagles 5-3 on Friday.

The Spruce Kings were aided by a 5-2 Chilliwack Chiefs loss to the Merritt Centennials

Surrey stormed out to a 3-0 advantage early into the second as Jeffrey Stewart, Matthew Campese and Desi Burgart beat Evan DeBrouwer to put the Eagles out front.

However, the Spruce Kings showed some resolve and tied the game at 3-3 courtesy of trio of markers from Blake Hayward, Sam Anzai and Liam Watson-Brawn.

The comeback would fall short though as Ryan Brushett and Ty Westgard iced the victory for Surrey.

The Eagles outshot the Spruce Kings 32-17 overall, including a 14-1 margin in the third period.

Prince George will play the fourth place team in the division during round one of the playoffs.

The Spruce Kings are back in action on Saturday against the Coquitlam Express.
