Spruce Kings Kick Off Season with Shutout

Photo: The Prince George Spruce Kings got a 20-save shutout from Ryder Green as four different players found the scoresheet in a 4-0 victory over the Powell River Kings at Hap Parker Arena.

The Spruce Kings opened the scoring at 7:01 after Green sent a pass around the boards to Mason Loewen, who found Trent Gates as he would walk into the zone one on three, and move the puck back to his forehand and rip a shot past Filip Vavro to get the 1-0 lead.

Just 1:20 later, the Spruce Kings snapped the puck around the offensive zone, as Anders Foyn Roen found Charlie Spencer who then immediately found the stick of Ryan Wachtel who deflected it into an open net to make it 2-0.

Late in the period, Loewen would go to the net on the power play and redirect a Noah Franzina pass past Vavro to make it 3-0 as Cooper Faughnan picked up the second assist.

In the middle frame, the power play would need just three seconds to score as Ben Vreugdenhil won the faceoff right to Spencer, who snapped home his first of the season to make it 4-0.

Green would make 11 saves in the final frame to preserve his 5th BCHL Shutout, while playing in his 50th BCHL regular season game.

The Spruce Kings power play went 2/5 while the Powell River Kings went 0/5.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7 PM.
