Spruce Kings get caught behind early as Centennials hold on for victory

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Spruce Kings dropped their second consecutive exhibition game to the hands of the Merritt Centennials in a 4-3 final Wednesday night at the Prince George Coliseum.

Merritt opened the scoring early in the opening period. On the powerplay, Victor Barakett scored 2:08 into the period to go up 1-0. Jackson Krill and Brandon Sacchetti were credited with assists on the play.

Later in the period, Krill added to his stat line. The goal came at 14:53 of the first period to put the Centennials up 2-0 at the first intermission.

In the second period, Davide Patella made it a trio of goals on the lopsided scoreboard. Patella’s goal came at 7:52 in the second period with Brandon Sacchetti getting the assist.

Prince George finally got themselves on the scoresheet at 13:14 of the period. Colton Cameron teed up a shot, that got caught in traffic and found the blade of PG product Linden Makow.

In the third period, Adam Mendelson stretched the crease and got Merritt’s goalie Merik Erickson sprawling across the crease, however, his pad wasn’t long enough as Mendelson tucked the puck into the net. The goal narrowed the score to 3-2 at 6:34 into the period.

Connor Farren added one to extend the Centennials lead. The goal came at 12:44 of the period and was assisted by Walker Erickson.

In the final minutes, Luke Eurig made things interesting as he found another goal for Prince George. Luca Primerano assisted the goal as they drew to within one. However, the Centennials held on for the 4-3 win and back-to-back victories over the Spruce Kings.
