RECAP: Single point salvaged in PG’s OT loss to Langley

The Prince George Spruce Kings played ‘catch up’ with the Langley Rivermen, who came into the game sitting three points behind the red, white, and blue.

Despite tying the game in the dying seconds of regulation, the home team would rally in four-on-four overtime to beat Prince George 5-4 at the George Preston Arena.

Goaltender Evan DeBrouwer finished the game with 27 saves on 32 shots, while Langley netminder Braedon Fleming recorded his fourth win of the season stopping 25 of 29 shots.

Langley opened the scoring 69 seconds into the contest, that is, before Spruce Kings’ defenceman Liam Watson-Brawn evened the score 1-1 mid-way through the frame. However, the home team would add one more, grabbing a 2-1 lead before the intermission.

American forward Dustin Manz took measures into his own hands, scoring one minute into the middle frame to tie the game once more for Prince George, but the Rivermen would regain the single tally lead 3-2, courtesy of Eric Butte after 40 minutes.

The third period in regulation belonged to the Spruce Kings goal-wise; Captain Kyle Johnson tied it up, Langley would rally for a one-goal advantage once more, but with 13 seconds left, Ben Brar potted his fifth of the season, sending the 4-4 stalemate into overtime.

Goaltending was the story of the first extra frame, but it was the Rivermen who scored the winner; Angus Crookshank, his second on the evening, with 23 seconds left.

Spruce Kings’ get one point, but drop their record to 7-4-2-1; Langley improves to 5-2-6-0.

After a couple practices and skates in Prince George, the Spruce Kings will travel to Vancouver Island for three games in three days, continuing an eight-game road trip throughout the BCHL.

The red, white, and blue will take on face Powell River Friday, Alberni Valley Saturday, and Nanaimo on Sunday afternoon.
