RECAP: Cents steal win from Spruce Kings

The Spruce Kings had the momentum to begin their second contest of the season with Merritt, but the home team capitalized in the third period on Sunday afternoon.

The Centennials potted three goals within seven minutes of each other, skating away to a 5-2 victory.

Prince George netminder Evan DeBrouwer made 24 saves on 29 shots, while Merritt’s Jacob Berger stopped 31 shots by the red, white, and blue.

Ben Poisson scored the opening goal from Captain Kyle Johnson and Layton Ahac, but with 37 seconds left in the first period, ‘Cents forward Zach Court tied it up at 1-1 on a power-play.

The Spruce Kings would regain their one-goal lead thanks to Johnson’s third of the year, but it would only last for 34 seconds after Nicholas Wicks ripped one past DeBrouwer for Merritt; the score stood at 2-2 after 40 minutes of play.

The final frame favoured Merritt as Prince George took a couple of penalties, costing them two goals in under four minutes.

The Centennials added one more before the mid-mark of the third, rolling away with their third win of the 2017-18 season and handing the Spruce Kings their third loss.

‘Kings fall to 5-3-1-0; Merritt improves to 3-6-0-0.

The red, white, and black took all Three Star honours; Zach Court, Joey Berkopec, and Nicholas Wicks went First, Second, and Third.

Centennials defenceman Jackson Munro was awarded the Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game.

The Spruce Kings will trek back to the Northern capital to face the Surrey Eagles this weekend in another home series at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA).

Puck-drop is slated for 7PM Friday and Saturday!
