2016/17 was one heck of a season for Kyle Johnson. Before things even began, he was recruited to Yale University, where he will go at the end of this year. Coming into the season, he admitted one of the things on his mind was making Team Canada West for the World Junior A Challenge, and he reached that goal making the team in December. The team finished fifth in the tournament, and Johnson returned to the Spruce Kings on their Island road-trip right before the Christmas break.

In terms of points, his pace was similar to his rookie season which saw him put up 41 points in 58 games. In 2016/17 he didn’t play as many due to the World Junior A Challenge, and also missed some time to injury. In the 46 games he did play, he had 14 goals and 22 assists for 26 points with only 12 PIM. Johnson was a player heavily relied on in a defensive role, and will likely take over top centre spot on the penalty kill with Brett Mennear moving on.

In the playoffs, Johnson missed games one and two down in Wenatchee, but when the series returned to Prince George so did Johnson, and with a vengeance. All four games he played, he scored a goal, including a two goal performance for the team’s first playoff victory, and first win of the year against the Wenatchee Wild.

He played his 100th career game this season, and is 23 away from hitting 100 career points.
