Spruce Kings sweep Rivermen after second straight OT win

It was Ben Brar’s turn to be the hero on Saturday as the Prince George Spruce Kings edged the Langley Rivermen 2-1 in double overtime from the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.

He took advantage of a turnover created by Ethan de Jong resulting in an easy goal during the 3-on-3 session.

“We had a good play up the rush there and I just couldn’t find it the first time but he reeled it in hard and just found me on the backdoor for the goal. I ran out of room earlier on the breakaway by trying to slide it five-hole when in reality I could have just around him but it worked out in the end.”

It was a tight-checking contest for the opening two periods as Langley led 1-0 after 40 minutes thanks to an early first period goal by Trevor St. Jean.

Ben Poisson evened the score on the power-play midway through the third period, his eight of the season.

However, the victory couldn’t have been without another sterling performance from 20-year-old goaltender Evan DeBrouwer who made 33 saves.

“I felt I carried my effort over from last night and I felt comfortable all night, these wins show us that we can beat every team in our division and this has already become a huge rivalry as our teams don’t like each other very much.”

Chad Cromar made 31 saves in defeat for Langley.

Prince George improves to 10-7-2-5 on the season tied for second in the Mainland Division, four points behind the Rivermen.

The Spruce Kings hit the road for three games next weekend against Wenatchee, West Kelowna and Trail.
