Spruce Kings muzzle Alberni Valley to victory

No matter who is on the ice, the Prince George Spruce Kings continue to keep winning.

This could not have been more evident during Friday’s 4-1 dominating victory over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.

The win was capped off by a three-goal second period from Chong Min Lee, Patrick Cozzi and Ben Brar who all lit the lamp against Bulldogs netminder John Hawthorne.

Some simple adjustments were made offensively, which led to the explosion over the final 40 minutes.“Our start wasn’t what we wanted but I thought in the second and third, we outplayed and dominated them and we just have to do the same thing tomorrow (Saturday),” says Cozzi.

“The coach always tells us to push the weak side and we started doing it more often in the second period and we were really moving around and moving the puck well the last two periods and it just opened things up.”

It was the seventh game of the Spruce Kings eight-game home stand, which now sits at 6-1 heading into Saturday’s clash against the Wenatchee Wild.

Prince George was equally as strong defensively courtesy of 20-year old defenceman Chays Ruddy.

He says the team continues to chug along despite missing Kyle Johnson and Ethan de Jong who are away at the World Junior A Challenge in Truro, Nova Scotia.

“With two of our top guys away it gives some guys who wouldn’t normally get that opportunity the chance to step up and show what they have and step into a top role. We couldn’t ask more of those guys as they are pulling their weight and doing a good job.”

It was also marked the return of former Spruce King Luc Salem who was traded to Alberni Valley last week in exchange for 20-year-old blueliner Tyson Slater who also suited up against his old club.

The Spruce Kings also held their Drop the Mitts and Sock it to Em! promotion in support of the St. Vincent De Paul Society where fans tossed winter clothing on to the ice after the first goal by Lee.
