Spruce Kings earn split against Langley thanks to Cozzi’s overtime magic

You might want to check your pulse the next time the Prince George Spruce Kings play the Langley Rivermen.

Both teams entertained the fans once again on Saturday as the Spruce Kings edged their Mainland Division by a 3-2 score in double overtime.

Patrick Cozzi played the hero at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena sniping home a shot past the five-hole of Langley netminder Braedon Fleming.

“I was trying to get it on net as I was pretty tired out there, so I just got it on net and hoped for the best,” says Cozzi.

“It felt great. The team really deserved this one, I was lucky enough to get the goal but it was a great team effort and it was a huge two points for us.”

It was sweet revenge for the Spruce Kings who fell 2-1 to the Rivermen on a Friday in what was another tight-checking game.

Even though both teams recently returned from the Christmas break, the animosity was evident, giving way to that playoff-type atmosphere.

“It definitely had a playoff type feel to it even though last night might have been a little tame, it was nice to see it heat up again tonight,” says Evan DeBrouwer, Spruce Kings goaltender.

The last four games between the two clubs at the RMCA have been decided by a single goal.

“Langley is a good team, they are fast and have a lot of good forwards and they make it difficult on our defence. They obviously are where they are in the standings for a reason and whenever you have two teams that are pretty evenly matched than it always makes for an exciting game.”.

The Spruce Kings improve are now 20-12-2-4 on the season and are two points back of the Rivermen for first place in the Mainland Division.

Kyle Johnson and Ben Brar opened the scoring in the first period for Prince George who jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Langley pushed back in the second as John Wojciehowoksi and Jordan Dawson tied it up at deuces at the conclusion of 40 minutes.

Prince George kicks off a three game road trip Friday in Penticton against the Vees.
