Nine Different Goal Scorers in 9-0 Win Over Surrey

Three goals in all three periods. When your team puts up those kind of stats it’s hard to lose, and it’s even better when your goalie stop all 22 shots he faces.

It took half a period for the Spruce Kings to get going, but the wait was well worth it. Coming in 1 for 14 against Surrey this season, Prince George was able to score on their first chance of the game as a Tyler Anderson point shot popped out, and was roofed in by Drew Lennon at 9:58 for his 4th of the season. Five minutes later another Anderson shot made it’s way through traffic, and Ben Brar tipped the puck in front of the net doubling the lead at 14:11.

Ben Poisson capped off the scoring as he got a pass alone in the slot, and with 1:17 left on the clock made no mistake ripped a shot into the top left corner. Tavin Grant was perfect in the frame stopping all seven shots he faced. He set the tone in the first 30 seconds stopping Surrey’s leading scorer Darius Davidson alone on the doorstep.

Shots were hard to stat with for Prince George in the second, but opened the flood gates once they did. On their second power play of the game, Kyle Johnson found a puck on the goal line to the left of the net, and was able to fire a sharp angled shot in for the 4-0 lead at 3:04. It was the first shot of the game for Prince George, and 11 seconds later Ethan O’Rourke came down on a two-on-one, and with the shot beat Williams under the glove. Surrey pulled their goalie after he allowed five shots on 18 shots. Daniel Davidson came into the game, and stopped all but one of the 11 shots he saw in the middle frame. Jarod Hovde was able to score.

With the goals, Hovde ended a six game goal drought, and O’Rourke scored his first in the BCHL in his ninth game. Grant had another spectacular period as he came up huge on a pair of shorthanded chances. The first he was able to get his left toe on, and then he denied Ty Westgard on a two man breakaway.

Prince George kept their streak of three goals a period alive in the third with the spread of scoring continuing. After going goalless in his first 13 games, Keegan Ward made it two in a row jamming in a loose puck in front of the net to make it 7-0 at 5:07. The bruiser would play setup man later on avoiding a hit on the right boards, then bouncing off another before centring the puck for Travis Schneider alone in the slot who buried with 4:12 on the clock. Grant’s shutout bid was in jeopardy late, but the birthday boy from Prince George wound up scoring. Brett Mennear was able to wrap the puck from behind the net shorthanded to finish the scoring at 9-0.

The stats were all in favour of the Spruce Kings which wasn’t surprising based on the final score. They outshot Surrey 43-22, and were two for five on the power play while the Eagles got shutdown on their three chances.

Chong Lee had two assists to start the game and was named the third star, getting the primary assists on the same two goals as Lee, Anderson was the second star, and Jarod Hovde who had one point in his last six games the first star. The challenge will be tougher Friday night for the Spruce Kings as they visit Langley for the first time this season. The Rivermen are 1-1-2 against Prince George this season, but have won their last eight games.
