St. John Ambulance is a household name when it comes to first aid with an estimated 98% of British Columbians knowing of the volunteer work done by St. John Ambulance. Teaching public health and safety courses as well as providing volunteer first aid services and selling first aid kits are some of the more recognized aspects of St. John Ambulance. What is not as well known is that they are a National Youth Organization that develops members to become effective role models and good leaders in today's world.
St. John Ambulance Youth Program has existed in Canada since 1933, in Vancouver since 1935 and here in Prince George since 1998. Currently there are over 400 crusaders, cadets and juniors in the province. Meetings typically happen weekly with the Prince George division meeting every Tuesday evening.
The Youth Division of Prince George has participated in many activities, certifications and camps in the community and continues to provide First Aid Services at many events. The Prince George Spruce Kings provides one of the longest ongoing events through the year for its members. Other events that benefit from the St. John Ambulance include Canada Day in the Park, MS Walk, 24 Hour Relay, Huble Homestead, Home Show and may other events.
The St. John Ambulance Youth Program is for youth between the ages of 11 and 18 who are willing to dedicate their time to learn first aid, provide public service, learn leadership and other skills as well as have fun and meet new friends. For the youth between 11 and 15, there is requirement to obtain a valid emergency first aid certificate; for those over 16 years of age, the requirement is to obtain a valid standard first aid certificate.
St. John Ambulance will provide the training for all their First Aid certificates that will become useful now and in the future for any emergency situation. Developing confidence along with the knowledge, St. John Ambulance provides the necessary volunteer credits for high school graduation.
