Ed Dempsey
General Manager and Head Coach
Ed Dempsey took over the coaching duties of the Prince George Spruce Kings on January 2, 2004. The Spruce Kings immediately began taking the necessary steps in re-establishing themselves, making it to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons and every season since. Dempsey has led the Spruce Kings to their best BCHL season ever; finishing with a 36-17-1-5 record in 2004-05, earning him coach of the year honours. With 120 regular season wins during his BCHL tenure, Dempsey is the winningest coach in Spruce Kings BCHL history and enters the 2010-11 season for his sixth full season behind the bench.
Ed Dempsey, who is entering his twenty-first season as a Head Coach or Assistant Coach, has been involved in five All-Star Games, three WHL Championships, won two Memorial Cup Championships and a silver medal at the RBC Royal Bank Cup in 2007. As a player, Dempsey has also won a NCAA Championship and two NCAA silver medals, two WCHA championships, a Doyle Cup and a Mowat Cup. He also participated as a player in the 1972 - 1973 BCJHL All-Star Game while playing with the Penticton Broncos.
Born in Kamloops, Ed Dempsey now proudly calls Prince George home with his wife Jeanne and two daughters, Keely and Lindsay.
Mike Hawes
Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel
Mike Hawes is entering his sixth season as a member of the Spruce Kings staff. For two seasons, from 2005 to 2007, he filled the role of associate coach and was behind the bench as the team won silver at the 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup. Prior to the 2007 - 2008 season, Mike accepted the role he is currently in as Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel.
Before his tenure with the Spruce Kings, Mike was a Western Hockey League scout for six years. His playing days involved moving through the Prince George minor hockey system which led to four years of playing in the WHL (1986-1989) with the Spokane Chiefs, New Westminster Bruins and Tri-City Americans. As a 20 year old, Mike played one season in the BCJHL splitting the season with the New Westminster Royals and Ladner Penguins.
Mike was born in Montreal, Quebec but has proudly called Prince George home for the past 30 years. He is married to wife Anita and has one son, Riley.
