Brandon West Named Head Coach for CJHL Prospects Game

Calgary, Alberta (January 5, 2016) – The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) is pleased to announce the appointment of the head coaches for this month’s CJHL Prospects Game. Brandon West of the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (British Columbia Hockey League [BCHL]) will lead Team West, while Nick Greenough of the Valley Jr. A Wildcats (Maritime Hockey League [MHL]) will lead Team East on Jan. 26 at the South Surrey Arena in Surrey, B.C.

“I am honoured to be involved in such an event,” said West. “I look forward to working with the players, staff, and others who work tirelessly to put on this showcase of the CJHL. Thank you to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, John Grisdale, the BCHL, and the CJHL.”

Brandon West is in his fourth season with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, and has been head coach since the start of the 2014-15 season. This year, the Silverbacks sit second in the Interior Division with a 22-10-2-2 (W-L-OTL-T) record, good for 48 points. Since taking over as the head coach, West has a winning percentage of over .600. Prior to coaching in Salmon Arm, he was an assistant coach during the 2011-12 season with West Kelowna Warriors.

“I am very honoured to get the call from the CJHL to be the head coach for Team East,” said Greenough. I am very humbled and look forward to coaching Eastern Canada’s best Junior A prospects in a great event.”

The 35-year old native of Windsor, N.S., has coached the Valley Wildcats for the past thre seasons after having previously coached the Valley Major Midget Wildcats, including a trip to the TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget Championship, in 2013. Greenough was named the MHL Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year in 2014-15, and is having another solid year, with the Wildcats currently only one point out of first place in the EastLink Division. He also had an extensive playing career, playing with the Val-d’Or Foreurs and Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League prior to six years of professional hockey in the ECHL and AHL.

The CJHL Prospects Game was created to showcase 40 of the top NHL prospects in the CJHL. The CJHL Prospects Game features players from the CJHL’s five western leagues competing against players from the CJHL’s five eastern leagues. The winner of the game will hoist the President’s Cup, which is awarded annually to the winning team.

Rosters for the 2016 CJHL Prospects Game will be announced Jan. 6. Player selection for the CJHL Prospects Game is a joint initiative between the CJHL and NHL Central Scouting.
