Adamyk Shuts Door on Spruce Kings

It was a game the Prince George Spruce Kings felt they deserved to win.

Outshooting the Powell River Kings 51-21, they ran into a hot goalie, and Mitch Adamyk stood on his head stopping everything he saw enroute to a 1-0 victory.

Coming off a long two days of road games, the Kings were looking to win the weekend series after a 6-2 win on Friday against the Coquitlam Express, and a 6-4 loss on Saturday night to the Merritt Centennials. Prince George meanwhile was attempting to make it four home wins in a row and were standing tall after a 8-0 thumping of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Friday.

The first period was fantastic for the home Spruce Kings, as they outshot the Kings 25-8. It would be Powell River coming out with the lead though, as Stefan Wornig bumbled a shot off the stick of Hunter Findlater, and the puck dropped in the crease where Josh Coblenz slammed it in for his first goal of the season. In the dying seconds, Brett Mennear had a chance from the right side but was robbed by the glove of Adamyk.

Period two saw Prince George muster just 12 shots, but also limited the Kings to three shots with Powell River not getting a shot for the first 15 minutes. The Spruce Kings were once again shut down by the Kings, with the best chance coming on a shot that Mennear rang off the post.

Heading to the third period, the Spruce Kings had plenty of reason for optimism as they led the shot count 37 to 11, and had completely dominated the play. The final frame opened up more with both teams hitting the double digits in shots, but again no team would find the net. On a three-on-one, Coblenz looking for his second of the night elected to shot instead of pass, and wound up being denied by Wornig’s glove keeping the Kings lead at one.

With Prince George pushing for the tying goal, they would come close on two occasions as Cavin Tilsley missed an open net opportunity, and Tyler Anderson rang a shot off the inside of the post that bounced out the other side.

Prince George pulled the goalie with a minute and a half left in the game, but the Kings did a great job of blocking the lanes, and trapping the puck on the walls to preserve the 1-0 win.

Mark O’Shaughnessy making his Spruce Kings debut was eased into the play, and looked fairly good in the game as he wasn’t afraid to jump into the play which created some chances.
